LDS Part 1 Examination Structure

The LDS Part 1 examination consists of two written papers, each lasting 180 minutes.

Each paper contains:

150 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions

Candidates must pass both papers in the same sitting in order to progress to LDS Part 2.

If either paper is failed, the candidate must re-sit the entire Part 1 exam.

Booking Process

Applications must be submitted through the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) online system.

Candidates must first create an RCS online account before completing their exam application.

Paper applications are not accepted.

Eligibility Documentation

Once a candidate books the exam, the place is secured provisionally.

Candidates must submit their eligibility documents within one week of booking.

Only scanned copies are accepted. Posted documents will not be accepted.

Candidates are advised to read the LDS Part 1 application guidance before submitting their application.

Number of Attempts

Candidates are allowed:

Up to four attempts for each part of the exam.

Non-Refundable Policy & Course Booking Postponement / Rescheduling Policy

All course bookings and subscriptions are strictly non-refundable.

Course booking tickets are transferable for the purpose of postponement or rescheduling only, provided that a written request to [email protected] is submitted at least four (4) weeks in advance of the scheduled start date.

Requests made with less than four (4) weeks’ notice may be declined and will be treated as a cancellation without refund.
