Comprehensive one day course aimed to cover the scope of practice of
Dental Therapist

Overview:

A one-day comprehensive course covering caries management in deciduous and permanent dentition starting from local anaesthetic administration, Rubber dam placement, teeth restoration and ending with deciduous teeth extraction.

Course Aims and objectives:

  1. To understand the management of caries in primary and permanent dentitions
  2. Extraction of erupted deciduous teeth under local anaesthetic
  3. Assess and manage caries, occlusion, and tooth wear, and, where appropriate, restore the dentition using the principle of minimal intervention, maintaining function and aesthetics
  4. Restore teeth using a wide range of treatments and materials appropriate to the patient including permanent and temporary direct restorations, maintaining function and aesthetics
  5. Provide pulp treatment for deciduous teeth
  6. Restore deciduous teeth using preformed crowns

Learning outcomes:

  1. Understand the scope of practice of a dental therapist
  2. Competence in provision of different direct restorations (Amalgam and composite fillings)
  3. Recognise the management of dental trauma
  4. Recognize the importance of primary prevention (Fissure sealant, fluoride application, dietary chart, and NICE recall intervals)
  5. Understand the indications and contraindications of pulpotomy, pulpectomy
  6. Competence in provision of adequate pain control (infiltration, Inferior alveolar nerve block)
  7. Competence in deciduous teeth extraction

Structure and teaching:

-It will be delivered as a series of interactive seminars combined with clinical hands-on laboratory training.

-You will be working on phantom heads- these offer the closest experience available to working on live patients.

CPD:

Total of 8 hours of verifiable CPD and a certificate of attendance

Quality control:

All EA Dental tutors are experienced professional. You will be asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the end of the course, which is used to monitor the course teaching quality.

Dr Nejatian qualified as a dentist (DDS) in 2001 and completed his PhD (dental materials) in 2008. He has 15 years of academic teaching experience both nationally and internationally including at several lead UK dental universities (Sheffield, Newcastle and UCL). He is a member of the UK Higher Education Academy and has taught and supervised students on multiple programmes including BDS, DDS, MClinDent and MSC in the Restorative Dental Practice Course at Eastman Dental Institute. He also led prosthodontics, technical skills and clinical training sessions at different dental institutesHe is an LDS and ORE dental manikin examiner at Royal College of Surgeons and Eastman Dental Institute. He has presented several scientific papers at national and international conferences, published several peer-reviewed journal articles and co-authored in three different dental materials and restorative dentistry textbooks including a popular textbook titled ‘Extra Coronal Restorations’ published in August 2018.
